people telling me to turn off my phone or get rid of texts are just…really missing the point that the social expectations are what is getting to me in the first place. people get upset when I don’t answer them. My boss texts me about some tests we’ve been running. My coworkers have questions about a project. My professor sends out pop quizzes. My therapist needs to reschedule.

Turning off my phone isn’t an option when there will be real-world consequences for missing something. That’s the entire problem I’m getting at here. We no longer have any expectation of alone time, and if we choose to opt out, we’re the odd ones out, and we just have to accept however that damages our social, professional, and academic lives, bc hey, no one else is complaining!
