IW-Theory

Remember Avengers 1 when Loki and Stark met in the Tower and Stark says:

“You’re brother, the demigod, a super soldier, a living legend who kind of lives up to the legend. A man with breathtaking anger-management issues, a couple of master assassins and you, big fella,…

But Loki simply answers:

Like… LOKIS PLAN WAS TO MAKE THESE GUYS WORKING TOGETHER AS A TEAM SO THEY CAN DEFEAT THANOS! HE IS THE REASON THE AVENGERS EXIST LIKE WE KNOW THEM TODAY!

I’ve always wondered why it was his plan to piss them off, because it actually doesn’t make sense, but now, it does.

Plot Twist: Loki’s been trying to defeat Thanos from day 1 and he purposely created the avengers

This is not so far fetched, guys.  It could have been a nod to the original Avengers comic from the 60s where they formed because of Loki (and Ant Man was an original member), or this could have been planned since the beginning.

The theory I’ve had since the movie is that Thanos tortured him, used the mind stone to control him, threatened Asgard in retaliation if he didn’t cooperate or all of the above.  Thanos’ primary method of recruitment is torture, and Loki looked pretty unhinged when he first showed up in Avengers.

Add to that the bruised, out of breath, bags-under-his-eyes, mildly freaked out look–

image

–and it’s pretty obvious sh*t went down before his arrival.  It’s made clear in the movie that when Loki uses that thing to control minds, the person acts just as they would normally, but with their main priority being to activate the Tesseract and bring the Chitauri to Earth.  Even if it means killing innocent people to do it (ala Hawkeye).

But why aren’t his eyes electric blue like the others?  Maybe because his eyes are naturally blue?  Maybe the color isn’t as vivid since he’s the general of the army?  Maybe I’m seeing things (or it’s the lighting), but they seem a brighter blue than normal right after he uses the staff to control Clint and Dr. Selvig…

image

Thanos could still be controlling him through the stone, and just having him do the dirty work.  After all, why would he give an Infinity Stone to the God of Mischief without making sure he can get it back?

Loki does have moments where he acts more like the sass-filled trickster we all know and love and less like the kill-happy lunatic he is in this movie.  This seems to happen when he gets knocked around (i.e. when Tony shows up to blast Loki, when Thor throws him from the g-d airplane, etc.)

There’s even the moment after Thor beats the ever loving snot out of him that he seems to show regret for a spilt second when he says “It’s too late to stop it…”

image

So, what does it take to permanently get out of the mind controlled state?  Concussion, apparently.  Hawkeye gets beamed–

image

–Tony almost kills Dr. Selvig–

image

–and I think we all know how Loki breaks free of it.

image

It would explain his “wtf just happened” expression.  Come to think of it, he was in similar shape when he first arrived.  Just sayin’.

Loki’s one of the most intelligent people in the Marvel universe, guys.  He’s also held/used multiple Infinity Stones, so he’s probably pretty freaking powerful.  I wouldn’t put it past him to be able to subconsciously form the Avengers to take on a big bad that he can’t defeat, while being simultaneously controlled by that same guy.  That may be why we have leaked set footage of IW-era Tony stalking knocked-back-into-his-right-mind-end-of-first-Avengers Loki for the next installment of Infinity War.  The remaining Avengers may have figured this all out.  Especially Hawkeye.  Since, you know, he lived it.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

So this has been an idea rattling around in my head for a while, but I didn’t exactly know how to write about it, but I think Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 are drawing on some major chess metaphors.

The first hint of this is in Age of Ultron. Near the end, Thor says this:

“The Mind Stone is the fourth of the Infinity Stones to show up in the last few years. That’s not a coincidence. Someone has been playing an intricate game and has made pawns of us. But once all these pieces are in position…”

My suspicion is that this is a game between Thanos and Tony. They’re the two Kings.

Why? They’ve been referred to as the “big two.” Their conflict was the longest one in Avengers: Infinity War. The two are parallels to one another. They have an “existential connection” (per Joe Russo). They have discordant color schemes (Thanos is blue/purple, Tony is red/gold). And, what’s more, a great cost was paid to keep Tony in the game

According to Wikipedia

In chess, the king (♔,♚) is the most important piece. The object of the game is to threaten the opponent’s king in such a way that escape is not possible (checkmate). If a player’s king is threatened with capture, it is said to be in check, and the player must remove the threat of capture on the next move. If this cannot be done, the king is said to be in checkmate, resulting in a loss for that player. Although the king is the most important piece, it is usually the weakest piece in the game until a later phase, the endgame. Players cannot make any move that places their own king in check.

When Tony’s life was directly threatened (aka he was put in “check”), Strange (a player on Tony’s side) sacrificed not only himself, but several other players to keep Tony in the game

When Tony asked why Strange did this, Strange replied, “We’re in the endgame now.”

Endgame” is a term used to label the late stage of the game where there’s fewer pieces on the board (post-snap); and the King becomes far more powerful.
