Last night, Destroyer premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. After the premiere, we had a fantastic Q&A panel with Nicole Kidman, Sebastian Stan, Tatiana Maslany, director Karyn Kusama, and screenwriters Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi.
I had the amazing opportunity to get up and ask Sebastian a question. I have it filmed myself and you can watch my video HERE (you can actually hear me ask my question much better) – it’s kind of nice to see mine because you also see Nicole Kidman’s reaction to my question, but this video is high definition and close in on Sebastian’s face, so… who am I to complain?
What I said and asked was this:
People who follow your work are no strangers to the fact that you are probably one of the best actors (Nicole immediately nodded in agreement as soon as I said this) who can act with your eyes alone. Whether you’re the Winter Soldier, Jeff Gillooly… (Everyone started laughing because he made goofy faces with his eyes).
So, given the limited screen time you had in the role, how do you prepare for a role where so much of what you say is actually unsaid? – and was all spoken – like, between you and Nicole, it was all in your eyes? You were saying one thing, but your eyes were saying five hundred other things. How much of that was on the page, and how much of that was your awesomeness? (This got a good laugh from everyone).
Above you can see Sebastian answers it beautifully, and I was so happy to have given him this moment of acknowledgment.
Best part of it all? At the end of the entire panel he actually looked out to the audience to thank me again. I absolutely wasn’t expecting it, hence my shaky hand, but I caught it and I’m still not over it:
I missed the last thing he said after the two thank yous, but still! Wow. I’ve said this before and I will say it again: Sebastian is truly one of the nicest people to his fans and we’d do well to remember it. I literally extended my trip to Toronto solely to attend this premiere and I am so glad I did. I’m so fortunate to have seen the film and this panel. His performance in it will blow you all away.
People are gonna have reactions to the movie in different ways that will resonate as self-truth because they’ll hopefully be in a place where they can ask themselves, “How would I have acted if I was in that circumstance?” – Sebastian Stan talking about Destroyer (x)

Just saw DESTROYER and boy o man is it dark and twisty. Terrific work in the lead roles, and a small but powerful cameo by @tatianamaslany. Gorgeous shooting throughout by Julie Kirkwood.
Also, in case you like me were previously unaware, let me tell you that dear god Sebastian Stan is a smokeshow. (x)
