PURPLE is often associated with royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition. So, it follows Thanos, a character who desires such power, is purple by design and that scenes in Infinity War where we see characters’ actions or motivations being directly impacted by Thanos are coloured this same purple. What’s more, as it is a rare colour to occur in nature here on earth, it’s commonly used to colour scenes that are otherworldly. Purple and blue lighting is also an efficient way to light dark scenes without looking unnatural or sacrificing mood. I was quite struck by the use of purple in this film, not just because Marvel’s colour grading team is typically bland and basic, but because Thanos makes the colour into something menacing, not just ethereal or alien.
