THEY BETTER BE CELEBRATING IN THE SOUL STONE OR I WILL ACTUALLY DIE
- this is killing me
- so it’s hc time
- one day Peter’s quieter than usual and he’s always quiet nowadays, here in the soul stone
- everything seems to echo here in the expansive golden nothingness that is their prison
- the echoes are odd and distorted and no one wants to hear the mutilated sounds of their own voice
- and the sound carries for miles
- but he seems to be sad
- no one blames him for being sad, everyone is missing someone
- oddly enough Bucky’s the one that notices first
- maybe it’s because Peter reminds Bucky of Steve and he wouldn’t admit it even if he had a gun to his head but he has a soft spot for the kid
- Peter’s standing there, looking out at the nothingness of the soul stone, at a cluster of people in the distance when Bucky comes to stand alongside him
- if you whisper, the odd echoes aren’t as bad
- ‘what’s wrong, kid?’ he murmurs
- peter shrugs halfheartedly, his eyes sad
- ‘I think it’s my birthday.’
- no one really knows how long they’ve been there
- there’s no change in the scenery, ever, just a constant gold glow
- Bucky examines the kid for a second
- ‘come with me’?
- they walk the short distance to the rest of the dusted avengers along with some others- Gamora is there with blood crusted into her clothes but she’s alive, there’s members of the dora milaje, poor Happy is there as well
- bucky looks at them
- ‘it’s the kid’s birthday.’
- silence
- for a long time, no one says anything
- and then Happy speaks
- ‘Tony was going to give you the iron spider suit when you turned 17. and he was going to renew his offer of you becoming an avenger.’
- silence
- silence
- silence
- Peter begins to cry
- ‘I miss him,’ Peter whispers, ‘I miss him and I miss Aunt May and Ned and MJ and- and-’
- and god, everyone understands that, but Peter is a child and he doesn’t deserve all this pain and they don’t know what to do
- Gamora gets up and hugs Peter tightly, shushing him softly, and he collapses against her
- then
- in the distance
- they hear a voice
- ‘I’m looking for Peter Parker, please, I wasn’t with him when this happened, my name is May Parker" and this is way off in the distance, but everyone starts to scream that he’s there
- and Peter is stumbling forward, blinded by tears, “Aunt May, Aunt May, oh my god, Aunt May,”
- and then she’s there in front of him, her hair a mess, still in her hospital scrubs, and she’s crying too
- they cry for a long time, just holding onto each other
- once they finally break apart, they realize the avengers and co are with them
- Bucky smiles a sad little smile
- ‘happy birthday, Peter.’
